3C90x - Cannot browse Network Neighborhood or cannot connect to NT domain
Symptoms:
Cannot browse Network Neighborhood
Cannot see others on the network
Error: "Error 38, Computer name is already in use by another computer", error occurs during the boot process
of Microsoft Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98 for the network connection
Error: "No domain server is available to validate your password. You may not have access to all network services."
Receive Domain login prompt when the peer-to-peer Microsoft Networking prompt is needed

Can find peers with Start>Find>Computer
Network logon at bootup
Cause: The following requirements must be met to browse Network Neighborhood in Microsoft Windows 95/
Microsoft Windows 98:
1. Microsoft Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98 network login script must be accepted to browse Network
Neighborhood
2. A unique computer name must be specified in Network configuration
3. The workgroup name must be specified in Network configuration and should be the same as the other
workstations are using
4. File and Print Sharing must be installed to see yourself in Network Neighborhood
Note: If File and Print Sharing is not listed in Network Configuration on other peers/workstations then you will not
be able to view that machine in Network Neighborhood.
5. If the above requirements have been met, set Browse Master to Disabled or Enabled.
If connecting to a Windows NT 4.0 server, and cannot browse Network Neighborhood, the workgroup specified
in Network Configuration may be different from the Domain name
Fix: Accept Microsoft network login script:
1. Restart Microsoft Windows 95/Microsoft Windows 98
2. When prompted for a password for Microsoft Networking, select OK and either enter a password or leave the
password field blank. Do not select Cancel.
Fix: Configure the client for Microsoft Networks for a peer-to-peer network:
1. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click the Network icon
3. Double-click the client for Microsoft Networks
4. Uncheck the Log onto Microsoft Windows NT domain box
5. Click the OK button in the bottom right of the client for Microsoft Networks properties screen
6. Click the OK button in the bottom right of the Network properties screen
7. Restart the system when prompted
8. Log in when prompted
Fix: To specify computer name and workgroup name in Network configuration for Windows 95/98
1. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click the NETWORK Icon
3. Click the IDENTIFICATION tab
4. Enter computer name and workgroup name
5. Click OK, then OK
6. Restart the computer when prompted
Fix: To specify computer name in Network configuration for Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
1. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click the NETWORK Icon
3. Click on the CHANGE button on the IDENTIFICATION Tab
4. Enter computer name
5. Click OK, then OK
6. Restart the computer when prompted.
Fix: To add File and Print Sharing:
1. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click the NETWORK Icon
3. Click Add
4. Double-Click Service
5. Select Microsoft
6. Select File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks
7. Click OK
8. Restart
Fix: If none of the above resolves the problem set Browse Master:
1. START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click the NETWORK Icon
3. Highlight File and Print Sharing and click Properties
4. One tab will appear (Advanced)
5. Highlight Browse Master
6. Change the Value from Automatic to Disabled for one machine, and Enabled for another
7. Click OK
8. Restart
Fix: If all of the above has not fixed the problem, check the hub:
To reset the hub, turn the power off and then back on
Fix: To connect to Windows NT server:
Match the workgroup name to the Domain name:

1. Click on START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
2. Double-click on the NETWORK Icon
3. Click on the IDENTIFICATION tab
4. Enter the Domain name in the workgroup name field
5. Click OK
6. Restart the computer when prompted
Fix: Verify that all computers on the peer network are using the same protocol
