Installing EtherTalk Drivers With Macintosh System 7
This document describes how to install EtherTalk software under Apple Computer's System 7 for 3Com's EtherLink/SE and EtherLink/NB adapters. Please refer to the section that describes installation for your adapter.
There have been many questions on how to install the EtherTalk driver when running System 7 on the Macintosh. You use the Installer program to prepare the installation of the EtherTalk driver. The Installer program is on the Install 1 diskette in the System 7 package.
ETHERLINK/NB SOFTWARE INSTALLATION:
This section describes how to install EtherTalk software on a Macintosh II family of computers with a 3Com EtherLink/NB or Apple EtherTalk adapter.
During the installation of System 7, the Installer will check to see if a 3Com EtherLink/NB or Apple EtherTalk adapter is installed in your Macintosh. If the adapter is present, the Installer will automatically update the EtherTalk driver to a Phase 2 driver.
If you have installed the adapter after installing System 7, here is how to install the EtherTalk 2.2.1 (Phase 2) driver:
Begin the installation procedure with your Macintosh turned off.
1. Insert the Install 1 disk into an internal disk drive and turn on the computer. If your Macintosh has two floppy drives, you can use either one.
2. Click on OK to remove the Welcome box. The Easy Install dialog box appears.
3. Make sure that the disk named on the screen is the one you want to install on. If the wrong disk is named, click on the Switch Disk button until the correct disk name appears.
4. Click on Customize. The custom installation box appears.
5. Scroll through the list of items until you see "EtherTalk Software" driver and click on the menu selection.
6. Click on the Install button to install the selected item. The installation begins. On-screen messages report status. Eventually, the Install 1 disk will be ejected.
7. When you are prompted for a different disk, insert the specified disk. Repeat this process as necessary. The install procedure will not ask for the "EtherLink/NB" diagnostics diskette. The installation will ask for the Install 1, Install 2, Install 3 and Tidbits diskettes from the System 7 package.
8. When you see a message reporting that the installation was successful, click on Quit.
9. Click on Restart in the dialog box that appears when you quit the Installer. The Macintosh restarts with the newly installed system.
10. Verify under "Networks" from the Control Panel that the EtherTalk driver is selected.
ETHERLINK/SE SOFTWARE INSTALLATION:
This section describes how to install EtherTalk software under Apple Computer's System 7 on a Macintosh SE equipped with a 3Com EtherLink/SE adapter. The software can be obtained from the Ask3Com forum, Drivers library. The filename is ELSE7.CPT.
Note: If you are using System 6.0.x or earlier on your SE, you should use the diskette and instructions supplied with the EtherLink/SE adapter. Do not attempt to install on System 6.0.x using the software described in this section. This installation procedure works only with System 7. Also, do not attempt to install the EtherTalk software included in System 7 diskettes. This is only for the Macintosh II family of computers that have an Apple EtherTalk or 3Com EtherLink/NB adapter installed.
Creating an Installer diskette:
After downloading the file ELSE7.CPT from Ask3Com, decompress it by double-clicking on the icon. It is a self-extracting file that can be extracted to a diskette or a hard drive.
You will need the following items:
* A blank diskette
* System 7 Install 1 diskette (to obtain the Installer program)
* System 7 Tidbits diskette
1. Initialize the blank diskette and title it "EtherLink/SE Installer."
2. Copy the following files to the diskette:
* "Installer" program, version 3.2 from Install 1
* "EtherLink/SE Install" file
* "EtherLink/SE Device Driver" file
* "EtherLink/SE Phase 1" and/or "EtherLink/SE Phase 2" files
If you are installing only the Phase 2 EtherTalk driver, you may omit the
"EtherLink/SE Phase 1" file. Apple strongly recommends that you use Phase
2 EtherTalk under System 7.
Installing on System 7:
With the new diskette, you may now install on a Macintosh SE:
1. Boot the Macintosh SE from its hard drive and insert the "EtherLink/SE Installer" diskette.
Note: The Easy Install button will install the EtherLink/SE Phase 2 driver on your system. If you require Phase 1 driver, click on the Customize button and select the desired driver(s). You will see the message "Can't use Easy Install. Click on Customize to override" if any of the following conditions is true:
* the computer is not a Macintosh SE
* the computer is not running System 7
* the computer does not have an EtherLink/SE adapter installed
Click on Customize if you wish to override because your adapter is notinstalled; otherwise, click on Quit.
2. Launch the Installer program by double-clicking it.
You will see a graphic depicting the EtherLink/SE adapter, followed by the Installer window. During the installation, the Installer program will prompt you to insert the Tidbits diskette from your System 7 set.
3. When you see a message reporting that the installation was successful, click on Quit.
4. Click on Restart in the dialog box that appears when you quit the Installer. The Macintosh restarts with the newly installed system.
5. Verify under "Networks" from the Control Panel that the EtherTalk driver is selected.
