3C589 - Why do I get an "Invalid configuration..." message?

Question: How can I avoid getting an "Invalid configuration...need later version of the diagnostics" message?

Answer: Insert a different card and run diagnostics. Check the adapter's configuration without exiting diagnostics. Remove the good adapter, insert the suspect card, and save the configuration of the good card to the bad card. Boot all regular files and get on the network.
