Installing EtherLink III adapters with NetWare Lite

Installing an EtherLink III (3C5X9) adapter to run with NetWare Lite requires three main phases:

* Preparing for the installation
* Installing the ODI driver for the adapter
* Installing NetWare Lite itself

Preparing For the Installation

1. Make sure you have the EtherDisk, which contains the ODI drivers required by NetWare Lite. The EtherDisk is the software distribution disk that ships with 3Com adapters.

Note: You can download the current EtherDisk, 3X5X9X.EXE, from 3Com's information sites:

BBS: 408-980-8204; set your modem to 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit.
WWW: HTTP://WWW.3COM.COM
Anonymous FTP: FTP.3COM.COM

The 3C5X9X.EXE file is self-extracting. To extract it, type: 3C5X9X -d.

2. Run diagnostics on the adapter. The diagnostics program is on the EtherDisk.

Installing the ODI Driver

This part of the installation copies the ODI driver to the root of the EtherDisk and gives it the volume label LAN_DRV_509.

1. Insert the EtherDisk into drive A. Then type MENU and press Enter to call up the Menus program.

2. From the main menu, select the option for "Novell NetWare Drivers." A new menu called "Install NetWare Drivers" appears with several options.

3. Select the option to "Install NetWare ODI Client drivers." Type Y to continue, D for DOS, and A:\ for target path. A prompt appears on the screen asking if the path is correct, and if the files should be installed on drive A.

4. Type Y.

5. Strike any key to exit from the Menus program, then follow the prompts to return to DOS.

Installing NetWare Lite

1. Remove the EtherDisk from drive A and insert Novell's Program Disk for NetWare Lite.

2. At the A:\> prompt, type INSTALL and press Enter. The main menu appears, with options to allow you to install a client, install a server, or install a client/server.

3. Select the appropriate option for your environment and press Enter to continue.

An installation menu appropriate to your environment will appear. The following steps refer to the "Install Client" menu, but they also work for the other installation environments.

4. Complete steps 1 and 2 on the "Install Client" menu.

5. At step 3 on the "Install Client" menu, when asked to select a network interface card, press Enter to see the list. A list of network interface card names and driver names appears.

6. Scroll to the bottom of the list using the down arrow key until the option for "*OTHER CARDS" is highlighted, then press Enter. You will be prompted to insert the disk with other LAN drivers into drive A:.

7. Remove the Program disk from drive A, insert the EtherDisk, and press Esc to continue. The ODI driver is read in to the program.

8. Select 3C5X9.COM from the "OTHER DRIVERS" list and press Enter to continue.

9. Remove the EtherDisk from drive A and reinsert the Novell Program disk, then press Esc to continue. The 3C5X9.COM driver is now imported and appears on step 3 under the "Install Client" menu.

10. Continue to step 4 of the "Install Client" menu to complete the NetWare Lite installation.

The installation process is now complete. The 3C5X9.COM driver has been copied over successfully. The machine is now ready to communicate across the network.

Note: NetWare Lite defaults to a frame type of 802.3. The ODI 4.0 3C5X9.COM driver that ships with EtherDisk defaults to 802.2 frame types. To change the Frame type to 802.3 for the 3C5X9.COM driver, edit the NET.CFG file under the NWLITE subdirectory and add a frame statement to call up the 802.3 frame type, like this:

Link Driver 3C5X9
Frame Ethernet_802.3 (This line must be indented.)

For further information on installation, please refer to the appropriate NetWare manuals.
