How to get the EtherLink III (3C509) to work in a 3+ Share network

3Com 3C509 and 3C509-TP adapters aren't certified for use in a 3+ Share environment. However, here is one method for using the adapters on a 3+ Share network.

Note: This method has not been extensively tested and therefore cannot be supported by 3Com Technical Support. Use this procedure at your own risk.

To communicate on a 3+ Share network, a computer needs an adapter card, a driver, and the XNS protocol stack.

* For the driver, use the NDIS specification MAC drivers, which are on the EtherDisk in the \MSLANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\ETHERNET\ELNK3 directory.

* For the NDIS-compliant XNS protocol stack, use XNSNB.EXE, PROTMAN.DOS and PROTMAN.EXE. These files, as well as sample configuration files, are available in a self-extracting file named 509XNS.EXE. This file can be downloaded from:

CompuServe (GO ASKFORUM, library 5)
Anonymous FTP (FTP.3Com.Com)
CardBoard (3Com's in-house BBS: 408-980-8204, 8N1)
