Installing EtherLink III drivers in a NetWare 3.11 server

This article describes how to install the EtherLink III (3C509) NetWare 4.0 drivers to a NetWare 3.11 server. It assumes that the user has already installed Novell's server software and is familiar with its use.

This article also assumes that you have the most current version of 3Com's MENU utility (MENU.COM) found in the root directory of the 3Com diskette (EtherDisk 3.2) that ships with the adapter. The DOS date of this file is 3-17-93. If you do not have this file, you can download it from 3Com's in-house bulletin board system at (408) 980-8204, 8 data bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. The filename is 3C509X.EXE. It is a self-extracting file that contains a new EtherDisk. To extract the files, type:

3C509X -d

If you have the older MENU utility (MENU.BAT), the options are slightly different but it functions similar to MENU.COM.

In the past, when installing an adapter into a NetWare 3.11 server, there was only one file required to "drive" the adapter. This file had a .LAN extension (e.g. 3C507.LAN). With the advent of NetWare 4.0, additional files are now required. These files can reside in the SYS:SYSTEM area of the server, on a DOS partition of the server (if you have set up a DOS partition) or on a floppy diskette. The drivers supplied by 3Com to use the 3C509 adapter in a NetWare 3.11 server are

3C509.LAN
ETHERTSM.NLM
MSM311.NLM
MONITOR.NLM

How you install the drivers depends on whether or not you can currently log into the server as Supervisor and whether or not the server has a DOS partition. Please choose the option below (A, B or C) based on your configuration.

Note: If you must install the drivers using option B or C, please note that the proper place for the drivers is in the SYS:SYSTEM area of the server and they should, eventually, be placed there.

Option A: You are able to log into the server as Supervisor.

1. Log into the server as Supervisor.
2. Insert the 3Com diskette (Etherdisk) that ships with the adapter into the PC's floppy drive and run the MENU program. For example, type A:\MENU
3. Select the menu choices to install the NetWare 386 server drivers:
2. Novell NetWare Drivers
2. Install NetWare 386 Server Drivers
4. When prompted, type in the drive letter that is mapped to SYS:SYSTEM and press Enter. The drivers will be copied to that area on the server and are ready to be loaded according to Novell's instructions.

Option B: You cannot log into the server as Supervisor and the server has a DOS partition.

1. Go to a DOS partition on the server. For example, C:\
2. Insert the 3Com diskette (EtherDisk) that ships with the adapter into the PC's floppy drive and run the MENU program. For example, type A:\MENU
3. Select the menu choices to install the NetWare 386 server drivers:
2. Novell NetWare Drivers
2. Install NetWare 386 Server Drivers
4. When prompted, type C:\ and the server and monitor drivers will be copied to the root directory of the C: drive. You can now load the drivers according to Novell's instructions. Remember to include the path to C:\ when loading the drivers. For example, LOAD C:\3C509 -and- LOAD C:\MONITOR

Option C: Cannot log into the server as Supervisor and the server does not have a DOS partition.

1. Start the server accordig to Novell's instructions.
2. Insert the 3Com diskette (EtherDisk) that ships with the adapter into the PC's floppy drive.
3. At the server prompt (:), you can load the drivers from the NETWARE\386 subdirectory of the EtherDisk. For example, type LOAD A:\NETWARE\386\3C509.LAN and LOAD A:\NETWARE\386\MONITOR.NLM
4. Once the server is up and running and you can log into it from a workstation, you will want to copy all four drivers (see above) to the SYS:SYSTEM area on the server. (See Section A above for instructions.)

Note: When you issue the "LOAD 3C509" command at the server, the ETHERTSM and MSM311 NLM files will automatically load; they do not need their own LOAD statements. All three files, however, must reside together.

A new MONITOR.NLM will be copied with the other server drivers. Please use this version of MONITOR, because the one that ships with NetWare 3.11 does not function correctly with NetWare 4.0 specification drivers.
