Installing DOS NDIS client drivers in a VINES network

The following instructions show how to install DOS NDIS client drivers in a VINES 5.00 network. These instructions should also work for version 4.11 of VINES, although the referenced diskettes may have different labels. Consult your VINES documentation as needed.

Banyan VINES allows you to configure a DOS client using NDIS drivers, so that you can install adapters that may not have native Banyan drivers into the VINES environment. Any adapter that has an NDIS driver available should work by following these instructions:

1. Create a LANMAN subdirectory off the root of your boot disk:

MD \LANMAN

2. Build a PROTOCOL.INI file in the LANMAN subdirectory. The protocol manager, PROTMAN.DOS, looks for the PROTOCOL.INI file in the LANMAN subdirectory by default.

Note: PROTOCOL.INI contains information about the Protocol Manager driver, Banyan's NDIS shim driver, and your network adapter. Following is a sample PROTOCOL.INI file. Substitute the information pertinent to your particular adapter for the text "YOUR MAC MODULE" and "YOUR ADAPTER's NDIS DRIVERNAME."

[PROTOCOL MANAGER]
DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$

[VINES_XIF]
DRIVERNAME = NDISBAN$
BINDINGS = YOUR MAC MODULE

[YOUR MAC MODULE]
DRIVERNAME = YOUR ADAPTER'S NDIS DRIVERNAME
INTERRUPT = (insert the interrupt setting for your adapter, if needed)
IOADDRESS = (insert your adapter's I/O address, if needed)

3. Create a VINES subdirectory off the root of your boot disk:

MD \VINES

4. Copy all the files from your VINES LAN S/W (DOS) diskette to the VINES subdirectory.

5. Copy all the files from the \NDIS subdirectory on the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) No. 2 of 2 diskettes on the VINES subdirectory.

6. Copy the DOS NDIS driver for your particular adapter into the VINES subdirectory. On 3Com EtherDisks, this file can be found in the subdirectory:

\MSLANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\ETHERNET\ELNKxx

where xx = 16 for the 3C507
xx = II for the 3C503 or 3C503/16
xx = 3 for the 3C509

Note: The NDIS driver for the 3C501, 3C505, 3C523, and 3C527 can be found in the \NDIS subdirectory of each adapter's EtherDisk.

7. Add the following lines to CONFIG.SYS (located in the root directory of your boot disk):

DEVICE = C:\VINES\PROTMAN.DOS
DEVICE = C:\VINES\NDISDRIVER.DOS

(Substitute the actual DOS NDIS driver name for NDISDRIVER.DOS.)

8. Change to the \VINES subdirectory:

CD\ VINES

9. Run the PCCONFIG program and select "1 - Network Card Settings", press Enter, highlight "NDIS Ethernet" and press Enter again.

10. Enter the "Interrupt Level" you've configured the adapter to use and press Enter.

11. Enter the "PROTOCOL.INI bindings =" parameter (this is the NDIS driver Section Name in square brackets you substituted for "YOUR MAC MODULE" in the PROTOCOL.INI file) and press F10 twice.

12. Highlight "2 - Login Environment Settings" and press Enter.

13. Choose "1 - Select Default Communictations Driver" press Enter, highlight "NDIS Ethernet" and press Enter again.

14. Press Esc to return to the main screen and press F10 to save your changes.

15. Reboot the workstation to have your changes take effect.

16. Change directory to the VINES subdirectory and run BAN.EXE. This program automatically loads the NDISBAN.COM file, executes NETBIND, REDIR and starts the login process.
