3C589 - NEC Versa 6000 Series - DOS, Windows NT: System Hangs

Problem: When using the 3C589 PCMCIA network adapter in enabler mode on an NEC Versa 6000 series notebook, the configuraiton/diagnostic utility hangs and the driver won't load. This happens in DOS and Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0.

The NEC Versa 6000 series does not support an I/O address of 300.

Solution: The best solution is to contact NEC for an updated BIOS that fixes this problem.

Otherwise, configure the 3C589 with the configuration utility on another laptop with an Intel compatible PCMCIA controller, in enabler mode. Configure it to I/O address 360 and IRQ 11, and then put it back in the Versa 6000 series laptop.

For DOS operation this problem can be avoided by installing Card and Socket Services.
