3C589B - Banyan Vines Client: Install Procedure

Following is a procedure to install VINES 5.54 software on a DOS network device/driver interface specification (NDIS) workstation.

Note: DOS must be installed on the workstation's C drive, or you must use a bootable DOS diskette.

1. Create a subdirectory called \VINES.

2. Copy the contents of the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) installation diskette to the \VINES subdirectory.

3. Copy the \3COM subdirectory on the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) 1 of 2 diskette to the \VINES subdirectory.

4. Copy the contents of the \NDIS subdirectory on the VINES LAN S/W (DOS) 2 of 2 diskette to the \VINES subdirectory.

5. Copy the contents of the \MSLANMAN.DOS\DRIVERS\ETHERNET\ELPC3 subdirectory on the EtherDisk diskette to the
\VINES subdirectory.

6. Edit the protocol.ini file as follows:

[PROTOCOL MANAGER]
DRIVERNAME = PROTMAN$

[VINES_XIF]
DRIVERNAME = NDISBAN$
BINDINGS = ELINKPC3

[ELINKPC3]
DRIVERNAME = ELPC3$

7. Run the pcconfig.exe program in the \VINES subdirectory.

8. Select option 1, the network card settings option.

9. Select the NDIS Ethernet option.

10. Enter the IRQ you selected for the EtherLink/PCMCIA adapter when the NDIS workstation screen appears. Select the
IRQ using the configuration and diagnostic program.

11. Go to option 2, the login environment settings option.

12. Select option 1, the select default communications driver option.

13. Select the NDIS Ethernet option.

14. Edit the config.sys file and add the following lines substituting A: for C: for a floppy disk installation:

DEVICE = C:\VINES\PROTMAN.DOS /I:C:\VINES
DEVICE = C:\VINES\ELPC3.DOS

15. Add the following lines to the end of the autoexec.bat file:

CD C:\VINES
C:BAN
CD C:\

The ban program loads the NDISBAN drivers and reads the pcconfig.db file to make changes during the PCCONFIG
phase.
