3C589 - Windows 95 - Installation QuickStart

The following describes how to use the Plug and Play feature to setup your 3C589 card and assumes that you are installing the adapter for the first time in your computer.

1. Turn on the computer and start Windows 95.

2. While Windows 95 is running insert the adapter and attach the cables.

3. Windows 95 autodetects the card has been inserted and displays a New Hardware Found dialog listing the 3C589/3C589b EtherLink III PC Card

4. Windows 95 will then prompt for the Windows 95 installation CD or diskettes (note. The driver for the card is supplied as part of Windows 95 OS)

5. Reboot the machine if prompted.

Verifying The Card Is Functioning.

1. Right Click on the My Computer icon and select properties from the drop down list.

2. In the System Properties Window select the Device Manager Tab.

3. Double click on the Network Adapter listing to expand this to show the following

3Com Etherlink III PCMCIA (3C589/3C589B).

Note. That this is the correct driver for the 3C589c as well.

4. If there is no Yellow Exclamation or Red 'X' shown, then the adapter is functioning correctly.

Network Setup For Netware Client Under Windows 95

This section describes how to configure the 3C589 for use within Windows 95.

To setup networking within Windows 95, complete the following

1. Open the Network Icon on the Control Panel.

2. In the Network Configuration ensure that the 'Client For Netware Networks' is listed. If not then a click on the Add button, select Client from the list of Services, then select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and 'Client For Netware Networks' from the client list.

3. In the box for Primary Network Logon select the 'Client For Netware Networks', then click OK. The machine will then prompt for a reboot.

4. This completes the setup of the adapter for Netware.

NOTE: Microsoft's Client For Netware Networks, the client that ships with Windows 95, does not support Netware Directory Services (NDS). In order to enable NDS support either download Microsoft's Netware Directory Services, which can be download from there web site and the file name is MSNDS.EXE, or install Novell's Client32 for Windows 95.

Network Setup For Microsoft Client Under Windows 95

Windows 95 automatically will install the Client For Microsoft Networks, the following describes how to check this and add it if necessary.

1. Open the Network Icon on the Control Panel.

2. In the Network Configuration ensure that the 'Client Microsoft Networks' is listed. If not then a click on the Add button, select Client from the list of Services, then select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers and 'Client Microsoft Networks' from the client list.

3. In the box Primary Network Logon select the 'Client For Microsoft Networks', then click OK. The machine may then prompt for a reboot.

4. This completes the setup of the adapter for Microsoft Networking.
