3C90x - Compaq DeskPro 2000 6180 and 6200 - Intermittently Failing to Detect NIC on cold boot

Problem:
Recently a problem has been observed with the installation of the 3Com 3C90x PCI network interface card when installed in a
Compaq DeskPro 2000 6180 or 6200 (Non-MMX) machines. The 3C90x will intermittently fail to be detected upon a cold boot.
Symptoms include:

1) Diagnostics will report "No 3C90x NICs installed in this machine".
2) Drivers will fail to initialize.
3) Windows 95 will not prompt for network login and after doing a power cycle new hardware is detected.
4) BIOS detects the 3C90x as a network controller, as opposed to an ethernet controller.

NOTE: The NIC will not be detected until a full power cycle is performed.

Solution:
Contact Compaq for an updated ROMpaq that addresses this issue.
