3C90x - NetWare 4.1x server - Installation instructions

Netware 4.x requires a 3.3 specification LAN driver

On EtherDisks v.2.2a and older:
the 3.3 specification LAN driver is located in the directory nwserver\33spec on EtherDisk1
the 3.2 specification LAN driver is located in the nwserver directory on EtherDisk1

On EtherDisk 3.01, only the 3.3 specification LAN driver is provided

Note: EtherDisk version 3.01, or later, is required for the 3C905B-TX

1. Install the NIC in a busmastering PCI slot
a. The preferred slot is the slot closest to the power supply on a motherboard, or the slot closest to the motherboard
on a riser card
b. Ensure that the NIC is fully seated

2. Boot into DOS without starting the server

3. Copy the DISK1\NWSERVER files to the server directory:
a. Insert the 3Com EtherDisk (Disk 1) in the A: drive
b. At the C:\> prompt type: CD NWSERVER. Note: If the directory for the server files is different change to that directory
c. Press Enter
d. At the C:\NWSERVER> prompt type: COPY A:\NWSERVER
e. Press Enter
f. The following files should be copied: 3C90X.LAN, 3C90X.LDI, ETHERTSM.NLM, MSM.NLM, and NBI.NLM

4. Modify the AUTOEXEC.NCF file:
a. At the C:\NWSERVER> prompt type SERVER -NA
b. Provide a Name for the server, up to 47 characters
c. Provide an IPX Internal Net Number for the server, 12 characters or less in hex
d. At the server prompt type LOAD INSTALL
e. Edit the AUTOEXEC.NCF file (Select System Options from first menu)
f. Change the existing load line to use the 3C90X.LAN driver. For example:
LOAD C:\NWSERVER\3C90X.LAN SLOT=X FRAME=ETHERNET_802.2 NAME=Y
I. Ensure that the X parameter is set to the physical slot where the NIC resides
II. Ensure that the correct frame type is set. Note: The frame type should already be correct as it was used for the original NIC.
III. The Y parameter should already be set, but a unique name should be used for each NIC and each frame type
g. Ensure that the correct bind line is used. Note: The Z parameter is an IPX Net number, 12 characters or less in hex.
BIND IPX TO Y NET=Z
h. Save the AUTOEXEC.NCF file
i. Down the server
j. Restart the computer and allow it to boot into the server normally
