3C90x Family - Windows 95 - Clean and reinstall driver
Note: EtherDisk version 3.1 or later, is required for the 3C905B-TX. This version will also work for the 3C905-TX.
Instructions to remove and reinstall driver:
1. Cancel the current installation if it is prompting for missing files on the EtherDisk
2. Remove the current driver listed under Network Adapters:
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
b. Double-click the System icon
c. Click Device Manager tab
d. Double-click Network Adapters
e. Highlight 3Com Fast EtherLink XL (may have a yellow ! or Red X)
f. Click Remove
g. Click OK
h. Do NOT restart when prompted
3. Clear current Network Configuration:
a. Click START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL
b. Double-click the Network icon
c. The Configuration window should be blank.
If not, remove any items listed (such as 3Com dRMON smart agent, Client for Microsoft, etc.)
Note: If a dial up adapter is listed, make note of the TCP/IP settings (i.e. IP address, subnet
mask, gateway, DNS, WINS, etc.) before removing the dialup adapter.
d. Close Network icon
e. Do NOT restart when prompted
4. Remove the old driver files:
a. Click START>FIND>FILES OR FOLDERS
b. Type: el*.* and click Find Now
c. Delete el90x.dos if it is present in Windows directory
d. Delete files el90x.sys, el90x.vxd, el90x.tsh, el90xnd4.sys, el90xnd3.sys if present in Windows\System directory
e. Type: 3c*.* and click Find Now
f. Delete the file 3C90x.inf file, if it is present
g. Type: net3com.inf and click Find Now
h. Delete this file, if it is present
i. Type: oem3com.inf and click Find Now
j. Delete this file, if it is present
k. Type: w95*.* and click Find
l. Delete the w95el90x.inf file, if it is present
m. Delete any of the above inf files (3c90x.inf, w95el90x.inf, net3com.inf, oem3com.inf) if they are located in the
Windows\Options\CABS directory
n. Click the Advanced tab
o. Type: VEN_10b7&DEV_9050
p. Click Find Now
q. Delete all files found EXCEPT for drvidx.bin (delete w95el90x.inf if located in Windows\Options\CABS directory)
5. Restart the computer:
a. Click START>SHUT DOWN>Restart the computer?
b. Click Yes
6. Install the driver:
a. Microsoft Windows 95 should detect new hardware
i. When prompted for the 3Com EtherDisk, insert Disk 2 into the A: drive (if version 4.x, insert Disk 1)
ii. If New Hardware Wizard appears, insert EtherDisk 2 into the A: drive and then click NEXT (if version 4.x, insert Disk 1)
iii. When message appears that Microsoft Windows has found the driver, click Finish
b. If the file W95EL90X.INF cannot be found, then type A:\ in the Copy Files From field
c. Insert Windows 95 CD-ROM when prompted
i. Path to the CD-ROM drive letter in the Copy Files From field
NOTE: For Windows 95 OSR2, path out to Win95 directory (ex: D:\Win95). For Win95A, path out to the root.
ii. If CD files are located on the hard drive, type path C:\Windows\Options\CABS
d. Restart the computer when prompted
e. Enter Network Password when prompted
NOTE: If you do not want to set up a password, just click OK. DO NOT click Cancel
(you will not be able to browse Network Neighborhood).
