3C905B - Netware 3.12 - Install 3.3 spec LAN driver

Symptoms: Error: "You must load this first: nbi31x.nlm". ODI 3.3 spec LAN driver fails to load

Cause: ODI 3.3 specification is the new standard Novell uses to write LAN drivers for the NetWare 4.x NOS.
NetWare 3.x NOS is written to the 3.2 spec which Novell no longer supports. Novell has final patches so users of the
older NOS can use versions of LAN drivers written to the ODI 3.3 specification.

When using the ODI 3.3 spec drivers, the network modules msm31x.nlm and ethertsm.nlm have to be replaced with
compatible versions. The LANDR9.EXE file, which can be downloaded from Novell's website, contains the compatible
version of these modules. In addition, NBI31X.NLM has to be loaded before the LAN driver. This nlm provides multi-bus
system support, which is one of the major changes in ODI 3.3. The 312PTD.EXE patches have to be applied as well to
address known issues with NetWare 3.12. Download the 312PTD.EXE from Novell.

Solution: Apply patches from Novell:
1. The 312PTD.EXE file patches have to be applied before the LANDR9.EXE modules can be used. The 312PTD.EXE
patches provide protected BIOS access needed by most PCI drivers in NetWare 3.12.

2. For LANDR9, only MSM31X.NLM and NBI31X.NLM (and not MSM.NLM nor NBI.NLM) should be copied to the server
startup directory (where the file SERVER.EXE exists). These drivers are located in the \33SPEC\312 directory of the
downloaded file. The Ethertsm.NLM is in the \33SPEC directory.

3. Complete and detailed instructions on how to apply the patches are written in the landr9.txt for landr9.exe and install.txt for
312ptd.exe, both included in the respective downloads.

4. Actual download filenames may change as Novell issues new releases of the patches. Consult Novell Tech support for
current updates.
