3C905B - Error: "No 3C90X NICs are installed in this computer" when running DOS diagnostics
Symptom: Error: "No 3C90X NICs are installed in this computer" when DOS diagnostics are run.
Cause: The 3C905B NIC requires 3Com Configuration and Diagnostic utility from EtherDisk 3.01 or later.
The program cannot be run with previous EtherDisk versions (such as 2.2a, 2.12, etc.)
Solution:
1. Download EtherDisk 3.01 or later
2. Access 3Com's web site: http://www.3com.com
a. Under Site Tools, click Software Downloads
b. Click Network Interface Cards
c. Select one of the Pull-down menu options for your NIC. For example, under the Product Number menu,
highlight 3C905B and click Select.
d. Under Shipping Drivers (v.3.01 or later), click either HTML or FTP to download
3. The driver HTML page will describe the two-disk set and the respective drivers contained on each disk
4. Click on the desired disk to download
Disk 1 (3C90xx1.exe) contains 3Com DOS diagnostics, drivers for NetWare, and OS/2
Disk 2 (3C90xx2.exe) contains drivers for Windows 95 and Windows NT
4. Create a folder/directory right off the root of your hard drive (such as C:\3COM)
Note: If the file is embedded several directories deep from the root, or stored in a directory with a Microsoft Windows 95
long filename, it may not extract completely. A DOS "Write error" may also occur.
5. Click on the desired driver file (i.e. Disk 1 3c90xx1.exe or Disk 2 3c90xx2.exe) to download, and specify the directory
location (C:\3COM).
6. After copying the file to the folder/directory, execute the extraction:
a. In Windows, double click the file
b. In DOS, type: 3c90xx2 (and then press the Enter key)
7. A DOS window should appear with a License Agreement. Type y to accept.
8. After the extraction is finished, go back into the directory
9. The files and folders should now be visible
10. To transfer the files/folders to a floppy disk:
a. Open the folder/directory
b. Select all the files and folders except for the executable file itself (3c90xx2.exe) and copy to the floppy disk
