About This Guide

About This Guide provides an overview of this guide, describes guide conventions, tells you where to look for specific information, and lists other publications that may be useful.

This guide describes features of the 3Com® SuperStack® II Hub 100. It explains, in general terms, the function of the hub in a Fast Ethernet network environment. This guide also provides instructions covering the following activities:

The instructions in this guide apply to the following SuperStack II Hub 100 models:

Information that is specific to a particular model is noted as such throughout the guide; all other instructions apply equally to all three SuperStack II Hub 100 models. Instructions that use the term SuperStack II Hub 100 (or just Hub 100) apply to all three models.

In this guide, the term Hub 100 TX denotes both the 3C250C-TX-12 (12-port model) and the 3C250C-TX-24 (24-port model) of the SuperStack II Hub 100 TX. These models replace the 12-port SuperStack II Hub 100 TX (part number 3C250B-TX).

The Hub 100 TX functions as an IEEE 802.3u Class II repeater or Class I repeater. See "Classification of Repeaters" in Appendix B for a description of the IEEE 802.3u repeater classifications. In this guide, the term repeater is equivalent to the term hub.

The term Hub 100 T4 denotes the SuperStack II Hub 100 T4 (part number 3C250-T4), which functions as an IEEE 802.3u Class I repeater.

The term Management Unit refers to the SuperStack II Hub 100 Management Unit (part number 3C215A).

This guide also describes two transceiver interface modules that expand the connection capabilities of the Hub 100:

This guide is intended for network administrators who supervise the functions and operations of an Ethernet network. The reader should have experience installing, using, and managing an Ethernet network.

If the information in the release notes shipped with your product differs from the information in this guide, follow the instructions in the release notes.
