Determining Where to Install the Edge Monitor

The primary requirement for the location of a dRMON Edge Monitor is that it be in the same multicast domain as the dRMON SmartAgent end nodes from which it will collect RMON data. The following multicast address must not be filtered out in the network path to each SmartAgent to be included in the Edge Monitor's view:

01608C11111A

Using 3Com's Adapter Management Protocol (AMP), the Edge Monitor uses this multicast address to communicate with the dRMON SmartAgents.

A workstation running Windows NT is required for the installation site. Once installed, the Edge Monitor automatically monitors and collects data from the dRMON SmartAgent end nodes.

3Com recommends installing the Edge Monitor on a dedicated workstation to ensure optimal performance. However, you could potentially install the Edge Monitor on a file or printer server, or a nondedicated workstation if the following conditions apply:

3Com does not recommend installing the Edge Monitor on an application server because of possible performance degradation of the server. Please contact your 3Com sales representative if you require more information.

Preinstallation Checklist

Before you can successfully install the Edge Monitor, you must have the following services installed and running on the computer:

The Microsoft HTTP Server Service (known as the Internet Information Services [IIS]) is not automatically included in Windows NT 3.51. The IIS can be obtained separately from Microsoft, or you can use a third-party server product designed for Windows NT. Consult the product documentation provided with these software services to ensure proper installation. The protocols and services should be available through the Network application in the Control Panel.

Verify that the Edge Monitor is in the same multicast domain or VLAN as the end nodes, and be sure to record its IP address for later reference.
