Using the Edge Monitor with a Network Management Tool

This chapter describes how to use a network management software application with the Edge Monitor. You can:

Pointing to an Edge Monitor

You can use the Edge Monitor with most network management tools that are RMON-compliant. Check with the application's vendor or documentation if you are not sure whether your management application qualifies.

In most applications, you must select (point to) a given probe in order to view the data gathered by the probe. The probe is usually identified by its IP address or host name. The Edge Monitor is also identified by its IP address or host name.

In the network management application, find the dialog box that contains the list of probes or devices being monitored. Add the IP address of the Edge Monitor and make it the focus of the application. In some applications you may be able to assign a name to the Edge Monitor's IP address.

Make sure that the community name string supplied with the Edge Monitor's IP address in the management application matches the one specified in the SNMP Service setup on the Edge Monitor computer. The default is Public.

Accessing Data on the Edge Monitor Station

Once the Edge Monitor is installed and the dRMON SmartAgent PC software resides on the end stations, the Edge Monitor can automatically gather network traffic statistics.

The Edge Monitor sends periodic requests to the dRMON SmartAgent end nodes to forward their collected data. Once the end nodes have forwarded the data, they no longer retain it and are ready to capture newer statistics. The Edge Monitor aggregates the data and maintains it. When the network management application asks the Edge Monitor for the data, it is forwarded to the application. Depending on the settings of the network management application, the data, such as captured packets, may be flushed from the Edge Monitor and no longer be retained.

Depending on the features in the management application, you can collate the statistics into various reports and formats that work best for your analysis or monitoring task.

Pausing and Restarting the Edge Monitor

There may be occasions when you want to pause the data collection activities and communication between the Edge Monitor and the dRMON SmartAgent end nodes.

When you pause the Edge Monitor, the dRMON SmartAgents become dormant after 2 minutes because they do not receive any notifications from the Edge Monitor.

To pause (or restart) Edge Monitor activity from a remote station:

1 .   In the Services dialog box, select SNMP Server.

2 .   Click Stop or Start.

This procedure halts or restarts the activity of the SNMP service that the Edge Monitor uses. If you have other services that operate with SNMP on the Edge Monitor computer, those services or applications will also be stopped, or restarted.
