Glossary

Agent

Software that receives queries and returns replies on behalf of an application. In network management systems, agents reside in all managed devices and report the values of specified variables to management stations.
Alarm

A threshold that an RMON probe can monitor for a given statistical group. If the threshold is exceeded, an event may be raised that could cause an action to be taken, such as writing to a log file.
AMP

3Com's Adapter Management Protocol.
Auto-Update utility

The software application shipped with the TdEMS that allows the Edge Monitor to automatically update any required files on an end station.
Broadcast

Network traffic that is directed to all attached devices.
Channel

A flow of packets that match specified filter settings. A defined channel may be turned ON or OFF.
dRMON

Distributed Remote Monitoring of network traffic that enables a network administrator to manage the network from any point.
dRMON SmartAgent PC software

Software that resides on an end station NIC and collects the dRMON data. The dRMON SmartAgent monitors and analyzes only the traffic directed to that NIC.
Edge Monitor

The software that gathers and aggregates network data from the dRMON SmartAgent PC software that resides on each end station in a network.
Edge Monitor web view

The software shipped with the TdEMS that allows the viewing of RMON statistics and graphs through any Java-enabled web browser. With the web view, network administrators can manage their networks in a secure fashion from any point on an intranet or the Internet.
Event

Condition on the network that occurs when a defined RMON alarm threshold has been exceeded. Each event type may trigger an associated action, such as "report to a log" or "send an SNMP trap."
Filter group

An RMON statistical group that defines packet selection criteria for creating a channel. Packets flowing through a channel may be used to increment counters or generate events, or may be saved (captured) for later recall.
FTP

File Transfer Protocol. A service that allows file transfers over a TCP/IP connection.
History

An RMON statistical group of time-based traffic statistics for an entire LAN. This tracking is not related to individual hosts and does not work across bridges, switches, or routers.
Host group

An RMON statistical group that shows the traffic amount for each node (or host) discovered on the network. This group is based on MAC addresses.
Host matrix table

The table in which data from the Matrix group is stored.
HostTopN group

An RMON statistical group that ranks the rate-based statistics for each MAC address by the amount of traffic. The network management station determines the statistical counter and sample interval used.
HTTP

HyperText Transfer Protocol.
MAC

Media Access Control. A method of controlling access to a transmission medium.
MAC address

The unique Media Access Control address stored in each NIC.
MAC-based VLAN

VLAN membership based on MAC-layer address. Since MAC-layer addresses are hardwired into the workstation's network interface card (NIC), VLANs based on MAC addresses enable network managers to move a workstation to a different physical location on the network but have it automatically retain its VLAN membership. In this way, a VLAN defined by MAC address can be thought of as a user-based VLAN.
Matrix group

An RMON statistical group that tracks statistics based on pairs of communicating MAC addresses, not network addresses.
MIB

Management Information Base. A collection of objects that can be accessed via a network management protocol. A MIB is a formally specified group of information pieces describing the configuration or operation of elements of a network device. SmartAgent software supports a superset of the standard MIB II specification. MIB II specifications are based on the Management Information Base for Network Management of TCP/IP-based Internets: MIB-II Request for Comments (RFC) 1213, DDN Network Information Center, SRI International, May 1990.
Multicast

A special form of broadcast in which copies of the packet are delivered only to a subset of all possible destinations.
Multicast domain

The portion of the network in which a packet addressed to a given multicast address appears.
Network event

A condition on the network that occurs when the flow of a defined group of attributes exceeds the set threshold, thereby causing an action, such as an alarm.
Network management application

A software application used to monitor and control network traffic and attached devices.
NIC

Network interface card.
Nine-groups RMON

The various groups of network information: Statistics, History, Alarms, Host, HostTopN, Matrix, Events, Filter, Packet Capture.
Packet capture

Recording of packets inside the probe according to the parameters defined in the Filter group. Packet capture can be particularly useful in diagnosing network faults.
Polling

A process in which a network management station sends periodic queries to software agents residing in network devices to gather information about network traffic flow. This method of controlling the sequence of data transmission by devices on a multipoint line requires each device to wait until the controlling processor requests it to transmit.
Probe

A software application on a network that receives the RMON analysis and capture data from the network agents.
RMON

Remote Monitoring. A network management protocol that autonomously monitors LAN segments at the physical level and reports by exception. It is a subset of SNMP MIB II that allows flexible and comprehensive monitoring and management capabilities by addressing up to 10 different groups of information.
Session

A network conversation between two devices.
SmartAgent

3Com intelligent management agent in devices and logical connectivity systems that reduces the computational load on the network management station and reduces management-oriented traffic on the network.
SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol. A network management protocol that collects and records management information from devices on a network and forwards the data to a centralized network management platform for later analysis.
SNMP trap

An alarm sent to a network management station.
Transcend

An integrated management solution from 3Com that is based on groups of logically related devices and includes a powerful set of management tools.
VLAN

Virtual LAN. A logical network consisting of several different LAN emulation domains controlled through an intelligent network management application.
