Instructions for Install of XJAEM3336 or XJEM3336 card under MacOS 7.5.1 or greater

First, the removal of the drivers if previously installed (not usually

necessary, but if desperate, can be done as a troubleshooting step).

1.            Trash the 3com Megahertz EthernetModem Folder.

2.            Open the Preferences Folder (Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences)

3.            Trash the following files:
FaxAction Folder
CruiseControl Prefs
FaxAction Files

4.            Close the Preferences Folder and Open the Extensions Folder
(Macintosh HD:System Folder:Extensions)

5.            Trash the following:
PC Card Extension
PC Card Modem Extension
USR PC Card Extension
FaxAction Extension
FaxAction Printer
Prosoft Ethernet SMC

6.            Close the Extensions folder, and open the Control Panels folder (Macintosh HD:System Folder:Control Panels)

7.            Trash NoChooser

8.            Restart (Special Menu, Restart)

Install Procedure:

This really is the info you want, the cleaning of the extensions and

what not really isn't necessary.  The MacOS will allow for the reinstalling of such files without problem, it will not, however, replace newer files with older ones unless done manually.

1.                    Restart computer (Special Menu, Restart)

2.                    Put in the card once the Finder loads.  It should show up on the desktop with a generic PC Card Icon.

3.                    Put in the first Install Diskette and run the Installer Utility.

4.                    After it is finished it will Prompt for reboot, so, reboot!

5.                    Card should function at this point? if not, refer to troubleshooting section of this document for basic Mac troubleshooting.

Installation under MacOS 8.1 ? 8.6 (MacOS 9.x compatibility not know at

this time, OS X not supported in any way shape or form.)

1.            Follow the install instructions above for normal install.
--Typical signs of incompatibility are Green flashing light going to Green-Red light upon trying to browse network through chooser.

2.            Go to http://support.3com.com/infodeli/tools/nic/xjaem3336.htm and download both files there.

  • Mhzcombo.hqx (contains one file: USR PC Card Extension)
  • 3400.hqx (Contains one file, an Update Utility for 2400/3400 computers, not needed most of the time, which contains an enabler required to allow this card to work in the 2400/3400 sockets, as well as newer versions of other extensions)

3.            Once downloaded, double click on the files, they should decompress into folders containing extensions.  This decompression will require they have Stuffit Expander installed on their machine.  Should not be an issue since all current OS's since 8.5 have come with it preinstalled; and if they have Netscape or IE installed, then it's on their Mac.  If it for some reason is not, you can go to http://www.aladdinsys.com/expander/index.html

4.            Take that extension and drop it on the system folder, there will be a dialog stating something to the effect of "certain files need to be stored in specific locations within the system folder to function correctly.  Put them away now?"  Click Yes, and you will then get the message that one file has been placed in the extension folder.

5.            Reboot the machine and attempt to browse network through the Chooser.

Troubleshooting:

Has the card been installed?

  • Does the card show up on the desktop with a 3com/USR Icon?
  • Click on the card once, and go to the file menu, then Get Info. There should be a box on the bottom that states info about the card.

Does the card work?

  • What color light on the card?  Green flashing?  Green-Red alternating?  First good, second bad.  If the second is the case, look into running the mhzcombo.hqx update.  The times I have seen this issue, that resolved it.
  • Go to the Apple Menu (upper left-hand corner), then Chooser.  Click on the AppleShare Icon, what do you see?  Does the light now flash Green-Red?  If so, refer to extension update for 8.1-8.6.
  • Go to the Appletalk control panel, see if Alternate Ethernet is a selection in the drop down menu.  If so, select it and then close the control panel, see if it lets you do it.  If not, there is something wrong with the card? could be that it is not plugged into the network (but unlikely), or that there is some missing extension(s).  If it is not in the menu, there is definitely a missing extension? like the USR PC Card Extension.  Check the extensions folder to check for it (you will also want to check the folder called "extensions (disabled)".
